Senegalese President Macky Sall announced on Thursday that his presidential term will end on time on April 2, but ruled out that the procedures for electing a new president will be completed on that date.

“The second of April 2024 will be the end of my term as president of the country, and the end of my binding relationship with the Senegalese people as president of the republic, please resolve this controversy clearly,” Sall said during a television interview.

Sall said he could not decree the elections before a national dialogue, adding that the dialogue was due to start on Monday and was likely to end by Tuesday.

Senegal is experiencing a major political crisis due to Sall’s decision earlier this month to postpone the presidential elections for 10 months from February 25 to December 15, before the Senegalese Constitutional Court announced the annulment of the postponement decision, calling on the competent authorities to hold them as soon as possible.

The postponement sparked protests from the opposition and civil society, denunciations of a “constitutional coup”, and demonstrations in which three people were killed and dozens arrested.
