Senegal’s parliament has approved a bill to postpone the presidential elections scheduled for February 25 to December 15, 2024.
The speaker said the law had been passed after police forcibly removed opposition lawmakers who were blocking voting.
The law, passed by Parliament, also stipulates that President Macky Sall will continue in office until a successor is installed.
Senegalese police dispersed demonstrations that erupted in the capital, Dakar, using tear gas and batons after the president’s decision to postpone the presidential election.
Senegal’s opposition sharply criticized the president’s decision, which justified it by differences between parliament and the Constitutional Council and called for demonstrations in Dakar, to which hundreds of citizens responded.
The opposition continues to campaign propaganda and is indifferent to the postponement of the presidential elections.
