The UN Security Council has urged Libyan leaders to engage in an inclusive UN-sponsored political process, calling for general elections to be held as soon as possible.

The members of the Council expressed their support for the plan of UN envoy Abdullah Bateli to hold a five-way meeting between the main parties, stressing the need to participate in good faith and without preconditions.

The Council called on Libyans to build on the Libyan Political Agreement and the Roadmap of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum, as well as the updated electoral laws agreed upon by the 6+6 Committee, stressing the importance of making tangible progress on the security, economic and political tracks.

In this context, the UN envoy faces intransigent challenges from political leaders who set conditions for participation in the dialogue meeting.

On the other hand, the Security Council threatened to impose sanctions on individuals or entities that threaten peace in Libya or impede the political transition.

The Council also called for the withdrawal of foreign troops and fighters from Libya, reiterating its concern over rising tensions and the proliferation of militias.

These developments come amid escalating tensions and clashes in Tripoli and Libya’s western cities, jeopardizing efforts to provide a security environment for the elections.
