Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Security Council, Vassily Nebenzia, said that the recent air strikes by the United States in Syria, Iraq and Yemen are aimed at exacerbating the conflict and endangering the security and stability of the Middle East, stressing that Washington enjoys impunity and continues its destructive policy in the Middle East.
Nebenzia said in a speech during a Security Council session on the situation in the Middle East: “The United States is pursuing its actions in Syria and Iraq, which have nothing to do with international law, and it is clear that the US strikes are aimed at exacerbating the conflict, and the objectives are primarily to prevent Syrian forces from confronting ISIS, its allies and anti-Iranian forces, and the United States aims to expand the conflict in the Middle East.”
He added: “It is claimed that these operations are coordinated but the US activities represent a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty and information from Washington about coordination with Baghdad is a lie and aims to distort the facts,” explaining that: “The strikes (in Syria and Iraq) have caused a lot of civilians and have led to the destruction of a lot of infrastructure, and this reaffirmed the hostile nature of US policy in the Middle East.
The Russian official continued: “The recent attacks on Yemen represent a threat to international peace and security, as for the primacy of law and the role of the United Nations, they must be emphasized and that these actions oppose the rules-based world order,” noting that: “This law includes a number of rules that are constantly evolving, but the United States is the one who drafted them to serve its goals, and the most difficult thing is to determine what these rules are.”
The Russian delegate continued: “Britain’s participation in these US strikes should not suggest that it solves any problem.”
He added: “What is happening in the region increases regional tensions and fuels the conflict in Gaza, which has been suffering for four months from catastrophic results that come due to Israeli practices covered by the United States, which hinder the Security Council’s reaching a resolution for an immediate and humanitarian ceasefire.”
