Although Libya’s Tripoli-based Government of National Unity is not yet ready to recognize that Russia’s diplomatic presence in eastern Libya is in the interest of the entire Libyan people, the planned opening of the Russian Consulate General in Benghazi has been postponed.

According to the Russian ambassador to Libya, Haidar Aganin, who gave an interview to the Russian agency RIA Novosti on the occasion of the celebration of Diplomat’s Day in Russia, the Russian diplomatic mission will continue to convince the authorities in Tripoli of the need to open a consulate in Benghazi and expects a positive response from the authorities.

The Russian Federation attaches special importance to its relations with Libya, has relations with the governments of eastern and western Libya, and always advocates the need to unite political ranks and stop differences in order to establish security and stability in the country.

This is the most important statement of the Russian ambassador to Libya:

Last August, diplomatic work in Tripoli was fully resumed and very serious efforts are being made to raise the bilateral dialogue to its previous level.

Last year, the second Russian-African summit was attended by the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi, who met on the sidelines of the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the dialogue between them not only gave a strong impetus to the intensification of our bilateral contacts, but also became a starting point for the issue of resuming the work of the bilateral intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific, and technical cooperation.

The embassy in Libya, a country that is unfortunately divided into at least two parts, also communicates with its east, and this is not a simple task. The opening of the Consulate General in Benghazi has been postponed for reasons that have not been fully explained to us.

The Russian Federation has played an active role in removing the effects of Hurricane Daniel, and so far, seven aircraft belonging to the Russian Ministry of Emergencies and the Ministry of Defense have delivered humanitarian and medical aid to eastern Libya.

– We are launching the process of resuming the work of the bilateral intergovernmental committee Between July 2022 and July 2023, the share of Russian wheat purchases increased to 86% in Libya, and we were told by Libyan officials about the need for dairy products and sunflower oil.

– The Russian embassy plans to hold the Russian presidential elections in Libya, and we have formed a local electoral committee, and the voting system has been put in place at the polling station in Tripoli, in addition to holding the Russian presidential elections in the city of Benghazi with the help of a group that will work to implement them there.
