Mali’s military junta has ended a 2015 peace deal with rebels, in a move likely to add to the turmoil of the conflict-ridden African country.
Military authorities said in a statement broadcast on state television that the agreement could no longer be continued due to the failure of the other signatories to abide by their commitments and the “hostile actions” carried out by Algeria, the main mediator of the agreement.
Algeria has been the main mediator in efforts to restore peace to northern Mali, following an agreement signed in its capital in 2015 between the Malian government and Tuareg-dominated armed groups.
The Algiers agreement called for the integration of former rebels into the Malian army, as well as greater autonomy for the country’s regions.
