Algeria’s ambassador to Mali has returned to Bamako more than two weeks after being summoned by Algeria for reasons related to diplomatic tension between the two countries.
Mali’s ambassador also returned to Algeria after being summoned to his country in a reciprocal action.
Mali’s ambassador was summoned from Algeria to protest “unfriendly actions” and interference in Mali’s internal affairs, authorities said.
Bamako cited “repeated meetings” in Algeria without the knowledge of Malian authorities with people hostile to the Malian government and some movements that signed the 2015 deal and “chose the terrorist camp”.
The incident comes after Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received a prominent Malian religious and political figure, raising tensions between the two countries.
Algeria plays a key role in efforts to restore peace to northern Mali after the 2015 deal.
Algeria has affirmed its “attachment to Mali’s sovereignty and national unity”, calling for dialogue and national reconciliation to stabilize the region.
