Artyom Studinikov, head of the European department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that if France sent troops to Ukraine, Russia’s response would not be only political.
In an interview with Russia’s news agency, Studinekov warned that sending French troops to Ukraine would increase the risk of a clash between the nuclear-armed countries.
Studinikov did not specify what actions Russia would take but stressed that Moscow had informed Paris of its position.
These statements come on the heels of French President Emmanuel Macron’s renewed willingness to send troops to Ukraine, saying in an interview with The Economist: “If the Russians break through the front lines and if a Ukrainian request is received in this regard, which has not yet happened, we must legitimately raise this issue.”
“Excluding this from now means that we have not learned lessons from the past two years,” Macron said, pointing to the change in the positions of NATO countries, as they initially ruled out sending tanks and planes to Ukraine after the start of the Russian operation in February 2022 before changing their minds.
