Moroccan security forces in Ouarzazate province were able to free an elderly man in his seventies, after his family had held him captive inside his home for more than 20 years.

The Moroccan newspaper “Hespress”, citing its sources, reported that the man was detained in his home illegally by members of his family in the Taghazout roundabout in the Amerzgane community, and he was found bound with iron chains for these twenty years.

The sources explained that preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was detained on the pretext that he suffered from serious psychological disorders and was attacking family members and citizens.

However, there is no medical record confirming that he was suffering from psychological disorders, making his detention illegal, a violation of his basic rights and exposing him to harsh humanitarian conditions.

After he was freed, the elderly man was taken to the hospital to receive the necessary medical care.

This incident sparked a wave of anger and shock among residents in the Ouarzazate province.

The Public Prosecution instructed the judicial officer to deepen the investigation into the case and reach the truth in order to take appropriate legal measures.

The sources explained that the family stated before the judicial police and local authorities that they imprisoned the person concerned in the house because he was suffering from psychological disorders and posed a danger to the family members and citizens. In return, they denied detaining him, but admitted that they had handcuffed him and locked him in the house to avoid any harm coming from him. .
