Mali’s national dialogue ended with a recommendation that military rulers retain power for several years, following a boycott of the opposition.
Participants noted that when elections are eventually held, the head of the junta must be a presidential candidate.
They recommended extending the transitional period and strengthening the candidacy of Colonel Assimi Goïta in the forthcoming presidential elections.
Military rulers will remain in power for another three years, starting at the end of March 2024 until 2027.
Mali is experiencing political volatility after successive coups in 2020 and 2021, and elections have been postponed due to the unstable security situation and terrorist attacks.
