The President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, announced the appointment of Abdoulaye Bathili as a special presidential envoy to mediate between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Sahel Confederation.

Faye confirmed that he was able to convince Batelli to assume the task of special presidential envoy on international issues, about three months after his resignation as head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
“I was able to convince Abdullahi Bathili to make him my special envoy, not only in the mediation mission in which ECOWAS engaged me, but also in other tasks in which I will need his experience, respect and stature,” Faye said.
Faye added that Batelli regularly advised him on international situations before accepting the special envoy position.
It is noteworthy that at the conclusion of the ECOWAS summit, which was held on Sunday, July 7, in Abuja, the President of Senegal was appointed as a mediator in the discussions with the Alliance of Sahel States.
Batelli’s first mission in his new position is scheduled to visit the countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger and meet with the current leaders to persuade them to reverse the decision to withdraw from ECOWAS membership.
These countries have seen the expulsion of French forces and new partnerships with countries such as Russia and Iran.
Many African countries are witnessing the continuous rise of national liberation movements working to get rid of traditional colonialism that robbed the country of its capabilities and wealth over the past decades.
