Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh announced on Monday that his government’s resignation had been submitted to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Shtayyeh’s announcement came on his Facebook page, where he stressed: “I would like to inform the honorable council, and our great people, that I put the resignation of the government at the disposal of Mr. President, last Tuesday, and today I submit it in writing.”

Shtayyeh explained that the decision to resign comes due to the need for new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the new developments in the Gaza Strip and the national unity talks, pointing to the need for a Palestinian-Palestinian consensus based on a national basis and broad participation.

In a related context, Shtayyeh stressed that the decision comes in light of the political, security and economic developments related to the aggression on the Gaza Strip and the escalation in the West Bank and the city of Jerusalem.

Shtayyeh concluded by stressing the importance of serving the Palestinian people and the unity of their struggling forces at this difficult stage, noting that he has placed his resignation at the disposal of the President to take the necessary measures.
