On Saturday, “ISIS” claimed responsibility for the attack on the Niger army that killed 30 soldiers and wounded 17 others last Wednesday.

“The soldiers were killed in an ambush targeting a convoy near the town of Tigui in the western region of Tillaberi,” the group’s Amaq news agency said.

Niger’s junta scrapped a deal allowing a U.S. military presence on the country’s soil to help it fight terrorism earlier this week with immediate effect.

Niger is one of several West African countries fighting militant factions, killing thousands, and displacing millions.

The Tillabéri region is a stronghold of ISIS and al-Qaeda in the Sahel, where it is regularly targeted by armed attacks, despite the heavy deployment of counterterrorism forces.
