About a hundred people died during the past hours due to the heat wave sweeping northern and eastern India.
Hindustan Times reported, “Victims of heatstroke were recorded in the states of Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.”
According to the newspaper, “46 victims of heatstroke were recorded in Odisha, located on the eastern coast of India, where high temperatures are exacerbated by high humidity, in addition to dozens of other people who were hospitalized because of this.”
According to the newspaper, “In the state of Bihar, at least 16 people died, and dozens were taken to hospital due to high temperatures, and 15 people died in the state of Uttar Pradesh, and 4 deaths were recorded due to high temperatures in both Jharkhand and Rajasthan,” noting. He noted that “among the victims were many Election Commission employees who prepared polling stations.”
India and some areas in the east of the country are witnessing daytime temperatures rising to more than 45 degrees Celsius, and today, Saturday, the final stage of the general parliamentary elections is taking place.
The high temperatures have exacerbated voter fatigue in the Hindu-majority country of 1.4 billion people, with unemployment and inflation the main concerns for voters.
