After his historic victory in the presidential election, Senegal’s new President Baciro Diomaye Faye delivered a speech in which he stressed his country’s continued status as a safe and reliable ally of its international partners.
“I would like to say to the international community and to our bilateral and multilateral partners that Senegal will always maintain its position and will remain a friendly country and a safe and reliable ally, for any partner who engages with us in honest, respectful and mutually fruitful cooperation,” Faye said.
“I launch an appeal to our African brothers to work together to consolidate the gains made in the integration processes of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), while correcting weaknesses and changing some approaches, strategies and policy priorities,” Faye said.
Faye stressed the importance of strengthening regional integration within the framework of ECOWAS, with an emphasis on working to improve the internal situation through national reconciliation and institutional rebuilding.
The new president pledged to eradicate corruption and provide basic services to citizens and pledged to work to reduce the cost of living, reflecting his commitment to improving the quality of life for the Senegalese people.
The president-elect, who has just turned 44, has never held any elected national office, and was languishing in prison about 10 days ago after his biggest opponent conceded his historic victory from the first round of elections, which is a political earthquake, and will become Senegal’s fifth president and the youngest president in the West African country, with a population of about 18 million.
