Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani on Saturday assumed the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) during the opening of the 37th African Summit in Addis Ababa.
President Ghazouani assumed this position as rotating president of the Union for the year 2024, succeeding the former rotating president, Azali Othmani, President of the Comoros.
The Mauritanian president was elected unanimously by the North African region, which includes Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Western Sahara.
It is noteworthy that the presidency of the African Union moves periodically between the five regions of the Union, as the Comoros occupied the presidency of the Union for the year 2023 for the eastern region.
In the past few days, President Ghazouani has sent messages to the leaders of African countries, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Libya, Sudan, and Egypt, regarding the coordination of the African Union summit.
The 37th Ordinary Session of the African Union Summit is scheduled to address ways to enhance continental cooperation and develop the Union, in addition to discussing current issues of interest to the countries of the African continent.
