The Malian army has opened an investigation into a shocking video showing a man wearing a Malian military uniform mutilating a corpse in front of a group of soldiers, describing the act as a “rare act of brutality” akin to cannibalism.
The army stressed in its statement that this behavior is not consistent with the military values of the country located in the Sahel region of West Africa.
The army statement stated: “The relevant agencies were mobilized to verify the authenticity of the video and determine the person’s identity.”
This step came after the video spread on the “X” platform on Tuesday, before it was removed for violating the platform’s rules. The video shows a man wearing a Malian military uniform and wearing the armed forces badge, cutting the stomach of a corpse using a machete.
According to comments and media reports, the man, who spoke in the local Bambara language, said he would eat the dead man’s liver, while soldiers wearing military uniforms surrounding him laughed.
It is noteworthy that human rights groups and the United Nations have accused soldiers in Mali of committing serious violations, including executions and torture, against civilians suspected of collaborating with militant groups waging an insurgency in the Sahel region since 2012, and the Malian army has repeatedly denied committing any violations.
