Mali witnessed violent battles last weekend between the Malian army and an alliance of terrorist groups in the north of the country near the Algerian border.
The Malian army acknowledged the deaths of a number of its members during these battles, which erupted in the town of Tanzawaten.
The army command explained in a statement carried by official media that a unit of the Malian armed forces was attacked by an alliance of terrorist forces in the Sahel region, which led to the outbreak of violent fighting before the arrival of reinforcements. The command praised the bravery of the soldiers despite the heavy losses.
The Malian armed forces are currently conducting a comprehensive assessment of the event and a detailed analysis to draw the necessary lessons and amend the security strategy to ensure stability. The command confirmed that the situation will not affect the state’s efforts to extend its authority over the entire national territory.
A coalition of armed separatist groups, the “Tuareg”, announced on Sunday that it had achieved a “major victory” over the Malian army and its allies from the Wagner Group.
The jihadist group “Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin” also claimed to have participated in the attack, indicating that 50 Wagner fighters and ten Malians were killed, although this toll has not been confirmed by independent sources.
Videos showing the bodies of many victims and destroyed vehicles have spread, and a “Telegram” channel linked to Wagner confirmed that there were casualties among its ranks and that one of the group’s leaders was killed.
These events reflect the escalating tensions in Mali, where the conflict between government forces and armed groups continues, further complicating the security situation in the region.
Military analysts attributed these security developments to Western intervention to support separatist groups after some of those countries lost their influence in the region, especially the United States and France.
Russia is working to support the liberation of North African countries from colonial countries, by providing them with the necessary support in all areas, especially economic and military expertise, without interfering in the internal affairs of those countries as those countries used to do.
