The head of Libya’s Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, said that his government will put the issue of lifting fuel subsidies to a public referendum, to poll the opinion of Libyans on the issue.

Dabaiba said in a speech on Wednesday that he is ready to receive everyone’s views on this matter, stressing that the door is open for discussion on how to prevent waste of resources and prevent the path of smugglers.

The head of the internationally recognized unity government added that the government will provide citizens with the price of gasoline, whether it is a sum of money or a coupon, in order to prevent smugglers from exploiting the savings of Libyans.

Dabaiba stressed that “it is unreasonable to spend 60 billion Libyan dinars, or about $ 15 billion, on subsidies, and go beyond the borders and overseas.”

The prime minister in Tripoli has assigned a committee to communicate with citizens to seek their views on the removal of fuel subsidies and how to deliver these subsidies to citizens.

The Libyan government, recognized by the House of Representatives in eastern Libya, has announced that it is not interested in lifting fuel subsidies at the moment, given the economic crises experienced by citizens.

Since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has been plagued by conflicts and divisions, and is run by two rival governments, one in Tripoli headed by Dabaiba, which is recognized by the United Nations, and the second in the east with the support of prominent General Khalifa Haftar.

Libya has been plagued by oil production for more than 10 years due to the chaos that followed the uprising against Gaddafi.
