The General Command of the Armed Forces welcomed the decision to grant the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, the powers of the Supreme Commander of the Army, stressing in a statement that this measure reflects the constitutional legitimacy of the Council.
The statement was published on the General Command’s Facebook page and stressed the leadership’s commitment to protecting the Libyan borders and the importance of achieving stability through presidential and parliamentary elections.
In the same context, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, stated that this decision came in response to the demands of 50 members of the Council, and also announced the suspension of the Geneva Political Agreement and the end of the term of the executive authority in Tripoli.
For its part, the expired government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh responded that its legitimacy continues and affirmed its commitment to holding elections to end the transitional phase, and that Aguila Saleh’s decisions are not considered serious and are repeating the same previous demands and contents.
It is noteworthy that the government of Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh was established in March 2021 under political agreements and with the support of the United Nations, to lead the transitional phase until national elections were held. Its term was scheduled to expire by December 2021, but it obstructed the holding of elections on the scheduled date and continued to rule.
