The Constituent Assembly for Drafting the Libyan Constitution welcomed the ruling of the Zawia Court of First Instance, which requires the High Elections Commission to put the draft constitution completed in 2017 to a general popular referendum.
In a statement, the Commission called on the Election Commission to comply with the court’s decision and implement it, warning that obstructing the Constitutional Declaration is an act criminalized by the Penal Code.
The Commission indicated that the ruling of the Corner Court is in line with what was stipulated in the Interim Constitutional Declaration, which entrusted the Constituent Assembly with the responsibility of drafting the country’s draft permanent constitution, stressing the right of the Libyan people to comment on its work through a general referendum in accordance with legal procedures.
The Commission considered that this path represents a correct step towards ending foreign interference in Libya, noting that holding legislative and executive elections in accordance with the provisions of the country’s permanent constitution will be possible after the implementation of the referendum.
At the conclusion of its statement, the Commission issued a call to all internal and external parties to respect the sovereignty of the Libyan people, adhere to the texts of its laws and judicial rulings, and take all necessary measures to open the referendum.
