Libyan authorities are preparing to reopen the Ras Jedir border crossing with Tunisia in the next two days, a week after it was closed following armed clashes between security services affiliated with the Ministry of Interior and battalions affiliated with the city of Zuwara (Amazigh).
It is expected that transit traffic between the two countries will resume after the Libyan parties conflicting at the crossing reached an agreement to form a joint force between the components of the city of Zuwara and the Chief of Staff in the western region, to impose security at the Ras Jedir crossing and protect social peace.
In a statement issued by the military room in the city of Zuwara on Thursday, it announced that a military force from several battalions affiliated with the Chief of Staff and under the supervision of the Western Military Region and in coordination with the Zuwara military operations room will go to the Ras Jedir crossing in order to prepare for its reopening.
Prime Minister and Minister of Defense-designate Abdul Hamid Dabaiba stressed the need for the joint military force to limit the work of the joint military force to establishing security at the Ras Jedir crossing away from political and tribal tensions, calling on municipalities and notables to support the state’s authority at all ports.
Al-Namroush, assistant chief of staff, explained that one of the tasks of the military force is to hand over the crossing to the competent authorities from the security services and support them to stop smuggling and chaos from outlaw parties.
The Ras Jedir crossing was closed on March 20 due to security tensions, following the outbreak of armed clashes between forces affiliated with the Ministry of Interior and the military council in the city of Zuwara, in order to control this strategic crossing.
