Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has begun an official visit to Libya, where she is expected to sign cooperation agreements in the fields of health, education, research, and sports.
This is Meloni’s second visit to Libya since taking office, where she met with the outgoing head of the Government of National Unity, Abdelhamid Dbeibeh, in Tripoli to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries.
Meloni is expected to sign “declarations of intent” in various fields, under the framework of the “Matte Plan” aimed at strengthening cooperation between Italy and African countries, according to a statement issued by the Italian government.
After Tripoli, Meloni will travel to Benghazi to meet with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
Meloni on April 17 called for a “new approach” to Africa, particularly on the issue of migration, during a visit to Tunisia, a country bordering Libya and one of the main points for the departure of illegal migrants to Europe.
