Italy’s Supreme Court has acquitted Argentine football legend Diego Maradona of tax evasion charges, ending a 30-year legal battle between the former Napoli star and tax authorities.

Maradona was acquitted of tax avoidance charges after he was accused of using companies in Liechtenstein to avoid taxing his payments from Napoli between 1985 and 1990 in exchange for photo rights.

His lawyer Angelo Pisani told Reuters that “Maradona has never been a tax evader,” adding that “the verdict does justice to fans and confirms that Maradona is not involved in tax evasion.”

This verdict comes almost three years after Maradona’s death in November 2020 from a heart attack, while investigations began into the legend’s tax payments in the early nineties, and the charges had reached 37 million euros, with some of his belongings confiscated during his visits to Italy.
