Amnesty International has opened a petition to collect signatures to press the UN Security Council to extend the arms embargo to all of Sudan.

At a time of intensifying humanitarian crisis in Sudan, Amnesty International is launching an urgent appeal to the UN Security Council to expand the country’s arms embargo, following increasing reports of serious human rights violations.

In statements, the organization stressed the need to take urgent action to stop the flow of weapons into Sudan, which has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.

The conflict in Sudan has resulted in a massive humanitarian tragedy, with warring forces using force in an inhumane manner, leading to repeated genocide, forced displacement and sexual abuse.

Amnesty International’s call comes amid reports that countries such as the UAE and Iran are involved in funding and arming warring factions in Sudan, reinforcing the urgent need for an international ban on the flow of arms into the country.

At the end of her statement, the international organization called on the international community to take immediate action to stop the violence and protect civilians in Sudan, stressing that the preservation of human rights must be at the heart of any international response to this serious humanitarian crisis.

The ongoing conflict between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army has killed 14,600 Sudanese and displaced more than 8 million people, including two million who sought refuge in neighboring countries.

The army is accused of carrying out air strikes on civilian targets that have killed civilians, while the Rapid Support Forces is pursuing charges of genocide, forced displacement, killing, abduction and torture of civilians, as well as sexual violence.
