The defense team for the head of the Tunisian Free Constitutional Party, Abir Moussi, announced on Monday that she had gone on a hunger strike.
Ali Tayachi, a member of the defense team, explained that Moussi decided to go on strike in protest against what she considers to be the confiscation of her right as a Tunisian citizen to run in the upcoming presidential elections, and also because the prison authorities did not take into account her health condition, which requires special procedures.
Tayachi pointed out that his client appeared on Monday before the summer criminal chamber of the Tunis Court of First Instance in the case filed against her by the Independent High Authority for Elections, based on the first paragraph of Article 24 of Decree 54, due to a media statement made by Moussi about the authority.
The lawyer added that Moussi was in a tired and exhausted health condition, which prompted the defense team to ask the court to examine her condition and take the necessary medical measures.
He stressed that the Elections Authority submitted a report on civil claims, which prompted the defense team to request an adjournment of the session to review the report and respond to the details and violations it contained.
The court decided to postpone the case to a later date, while refusing to release Abir Moussa.
Earlier, the Free Constitutional Party confirmed its adherence to the decision to submit Moussa’s candidacy file for the upcoming presidential elections, even if it was rejected.
