The former Libyan Minister of Defense, Mohammed al-Barghathi, considered that the presence of more than 140 Libyan diplomatic missions abroad is not a source of pride, but rather a financial burden on national resources.
He stressed in a statement to the newspaper “Asharq Al-Awsat” that many of these missions are located in countries that do not have important political or economic relations with Libya and do not have large Libyan communities.
Barghathy pointed out that these missions are a legacy from the era of the former regime, stressing that despite the complexities of the situation, restructuring the diplomatic network is not impossible.
He called for reducing the number of missions, with a view to rationalizing expenditures and ensuring the continuity of the work of vital missions such as those at the United Nations.
Al-Barghathy warned of the need to review the IFAD policies adopted by successive governments since 2011, which benefited relatives and loyalists of political and executive leaders, including leaders of armed formations.
He expressed surprise that modern technology has not been further exploited to facilitate communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tripoli, and to enhance administrative efficiency and diplomatic communication.
It is noteworthy that the number of Libyan embassies and diplomatic missions abroad is 133 embassies or missions, and their expenses amounted to $ 219 million during the first three months of this year.
