The European Union announced the allocation of 201 million euros in humanitarian funding to meet the needs of the most vulnerable communities affected by the humanitarian crisis in the countries of Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria.
In a statement published by the European Commission on its official website, it indicated that “the funding will support food security, assistance in cases of malnutrition, health care, protection, water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter and education activities, as well as the transportation of humanitarian workers and supplies to remote and inaccessible locations.”
The statement also noted that “the European Union’s humanitarian aid response will continue to focus on countries and regions directly affected by continuing insecurity and conflict, including coastal countries in West Africa and the Central Sahel region.”
The European Commission issued its statement following a meeting of senior officials regarding the Sahel and Lake Chad region, in the Belgian capital, Brussels, in the presence of the European Union Commissioner, Janez Lenaričić.
The total funding is expected to support humanitarian projects in Burkina Faso with €26.9 million, Cameroon with €21 million, and Chad with €57.9 million, including the recently allocated €8.7 million to respond to the consequences of the conflict in Sudan for neighboring countries, and €3.1 million Another euro to support the EU Humanitarian Air Bridge Operation in the East.
The statement indicated that the funding supports, in addition to the above, the response to epidemics and population movement, by allocating 2.4 million euros from the Emergency Toolbox, which is a tool to assist in sudden crises designated to respond to emergency situations outside the European Union.
