The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism has decided to halt the restoration of the controversial pyramid of Menkaure in Egypt’s Giza region.

The decisions of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities during the restoration of the pyramid sparked wide controversy by experts and tourists, as it decided to restore its original shape by wrapping it with granite slabs.

The restoration of the “Menkaure” pyramid, which is the smallest and last major pyramid in Giza, began in January 2024, and initially about a third of its height was coated with red granite from Aswan, white limestone, and over time, only seven of the 16 granite layers remained, the granite slabs that fell to the ground and were stretching at its base were to be restored.

The Egyptian-Japanese archaeological mission has begun work, and the restoration process was scheduled to take three years and include photogrammetric and laser scanning techniques. However, after harsh criticism, including from the professional community, the works were temporarily suspended until a special committee analyzed the feasibility of the project and determined the approach to future work.
