Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid commented on Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s statements before his country’s parliament about negotiating the Renaissance Dam.
In an interview with Al-Ghad TV, Abu Zeid said: “The Ethiopian prime minister’s statements have a degree of ambiguity,” pointing out that Cairo announced its official position some time ago.
Abu Zeid continued: “We stopped continuing this negotiating process, which does not lead to a clear end, and does not reveal real intentions and political will to reach an agreement.”
Abu Zeid continued: “Cairo has declared hundreds of times that it is not against development in Ethiopia, and that it is ready to help in development projects, nor is it against the construction of the dam in principle, but it wants to guarantee the rights of its people to the waters of the Nile River.”
“Any talk that seeks to distort the Egyptian position and imply that Cairo is not serious is not fair,” Abu Zeid said.
Abiy Ahmed confirmed Ethiopia’s readiness to negotiate on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) at the 14th regular session of parliament last Tuesday. In response to the tripartite negotiations on the dam, he pointed out that Ethiopia is ready to listen to the demands of the brotherly Egyptian people and address them as best as possible, stressing the need for the Egyptian side to also be ready to meet Ethiopia’s demands.
