Doctors Without Borders recovered the bodies of 12 migrants off the coast of Libya, one day after it recovered 11 bodies in the same area.

This tragic incident raised the death toll in the Mediterranean Sea to 12, as search operations continue in international waters.

A Sea Watch plane spotted the body of the latest victim on Saturday, after witnessing the discovery of 11 other bodies the previous day.

In a tweet on the social media platform “X”, the German organization confirmed that its plane crew had seen the bodies on a previous flight, noting that search and rescue efforts were continuing.

Doctors Without Borders rescued more than 160 people from boats and explained that its ship recovered 146 migrants in two operations, while it found 20 others in a separate boat, and the bodies of 11 people were recovered by the surveillance plane.

This incident comes in a broader context of the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, where the United Nations has confirmed that there have been more than 20,000 deaths and disappearances since 2014, making it the most dangerous crossing for migrants in the world.

For its part, Italy urged Tunisia and Libya to intensify efforts to prevent the migrants from going into the sea, and imposed strict restrictions on rescue operations, causing a delay in providing assistance to survivors.
