The United Nations has warned that overcrowded refugee camps in eastern Chad are in severe crisis due to a lack of funding as the conflict in Sudan continues.
The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that one million people in Chad, including refugees, are facing a loss of access to basic assistance.
WFP noted earlier this month that the conflict in Sudan has killed more than 5,000 people and displaced more than 5 million others.
The United Nations has warned that the conflict is on track to become the world’s worst hunger crisis, with a third of Sudan’s 18 million people facing food insecurity.
WFP High Representative in Chad Pierre Honorat said the repercussions of the crisis in Sudan were beyond the humanitarian response due to lack of funding and overstrain.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) revealed that nearly 1,000 cases of hepatitis E have been recorded in the camps due to lack of drinking water and sanitation.
The World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Tuesday it would be forced to suspend aid to some 1.2 million Sudanese refugees in Chad if it did not receive urgent funding.
