On Saturday, the army of the Democratic Republic of Congo accused Rwanda of launching an attack on Goma airport in the eastern part of the country. The airport was targeted by airstrikes as part of the ongoing military escalation in the region, including clashes with rebels of the ‘M23’ movement, supported by Kigali.
Lieutenant Colonel Guillaume Ndjiki, spokesman for the army in North Kivu province, confirmed that “Rwandan army attack marches” carried out the attack overnight at two o’clock in the morning local time, and left Rwandan territory to carry out the attack on Congolese territory.
Fighting has been raging in the strategic town of Sake in Masisi province for ten days, some 25km west of Goma.
Despite the absence of an official toll, various sources reported dozens of deaths and injuries among civilians and military personnel.
In a statement, spokesman Ndjiki confirmed that the attacks targeted Congolese armed forces aircraft, noting that civilian aircraft were operating as usual despite the damage caused by the attack.
