The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has expressed grave concern about reports of widespread abuses in recent days in fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Wad Madani, Sudan’s second largest city.

In a statement published on Wednesday, Turk stressed that the humanitarian situation unfolding in the entire state of Gezira, which hosts nearly half a million displaced people, is very difficult, pointing to the killing of dozens of civilians, including medical workers, and the injury of many in Wad Madani between 15 and 19 of this month.

The UN official said there were also reports of mutilation and looting as well as an attack on a hospital, and that both sides arrested dozens of people, including individuals detained on ethnic and tribal grounds, while displacing at least 250,000 people.
