Colombian President Gustavo Pietro on Wednesday called for severing ties with Israel if it does not comply with a Security Council resolution calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
In a post on the X platform, Pietro said: “If Israel does not comply with the UN ceasefire resolution, I call on the countries of the world to sever diplomatic relations with it.”
Colombian Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva asked the Israeli ambassador in Bogotá to apologize and leave the country.
Last November, the Colombian president announced the summoning of his country’s ambassador to Israel for consultations, in protest against the war in Gaza, accusing “the major powers of using excessive and unconscious military force in order to impose their will on all humanity.”
On Monday, the United Nations Security Council, at the initiative of Algeria and adopted by the rest of the elected members with a total of 14 votes in favor, adopted a resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
