Chadian Prime Minister Succés Masra expressed reservations about the results of the presidential elections, calling for their cancellation after he replaced interim President Mohamed Idriss Deby.

Masra, who leads the Raiders party, alleged that there had been significant irregularities in the elections and submitted a formal request to the Constitutional Council to review the electoral process.

He explained in a post on the Facebook platform that the application submitted included digital and visual evidence showing manipulation of votes and interference by military authorities in the counting process.

The party’s vice president, Sitak Yumpatina, confirmed that the materials submitted contained videos and documents proving violations occurred during polling day.

The Chadian opposition described President Masra as a candidate imposed to maintain false democratic appearances in the country, while the N’Djamena prosecutor confirmed that the election campaign of the “Raiders” party saw the arrest of 76 individuals, on charges of falsifying ballot documents.

After the initial announcement of Mohamed Idriss Deby’s 61% victory, all eyes are on the Constitutional Council to determine the fate of the appeals submitted and to announce the final results, expected at the latest on May 23.

Chadian presidential elections were held on May 6, 2024, and followed a constitutional referendum held in December 2023, following the killing of President Idriss Deby in 2021 by rebels and the seizure of power by his son Mahamat Idriss Deby.

Chad is the first of several African countries to return to constitutional rule through the ballot box to be ruled by military councils in the west and center of the continent after coups, and despite tensions and disagreements, the elections were organized according to the regulations agreed in 2010.
