Authorities in Mali banned the opposition coalition, saying it posed “threats of disturbing public order”.

Sources confirmed to AFP that Malian authorities have imposed a ban on the activities of the recently founded coalition.

The coalition, made up of members from 30 opposition parties and formations, including supporters of prominent Sheikh Mahmoud Dicko, has sharply criticized the military council.

In a decision issued by the governor of the capital, Abdoulaye Coulibaly, an official ban was introduced on the activities of the coalition in the capital, Bamako, due to “the security context and the risk of threats to disturb public order”, considering that the activities of the coalition constitute a “violation of the regulations in force”.

For its part, the coalition announced its rejection of this decision, considering it “illegitimate, illegal and violating the freedom of expression guaranteed by the constitution.”

The ban comes in the context of the postponement of presidential elections scheduled for February, without setting a new date.

Since the August 2020 coup, the West African Economic Community (ECOWAS) has tried to set a deadline for the period of military rule, but to no avail, and in June 2022, the military council announced that it would hand over power to civilians at the end of a transitional period that ends in March 2024, before the elections were postponed.
