According to state media in Niger, Russian military trainers arrived in the Nigerien capital Niamey on a plane loaded with military equipment and equipment, in a Russian contribution to building and qualifying the Nigerien army and fighting terrorism.

Nigerien state television (RTN )broadcast footage of a military cargo plane unloading equipment. “We are here to train Niger’s army,” one of the trainers said. and to strengthen military cooperation between Russia and Niger.”

State television indicated that the arrival of Russian trainers with their equipment comes to activate an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Nigerien television also said Russia had agreed to install an air defense system in Niger.

In Russia, Russian media reported that Russian experts had arrived in Niger to train local security forces in the fight against terrorism.

The Russian news agency “Novosti” quoted a Russian expert as saying that “the African Corps will establish relations here and will also help form and train the Niger army.”

“We have a lot of experience in fighting terrorism. We are here to share these experiences with friends.”

This comes after authorities in Niger scrapped military cooperation agreements with Paris and Washington, part of a new African liberation movement developing against European and American colonization of the wealthy western region.

Niger’s ruling authorities have taken a series of decisions against France, including the expulsion of the ambassador, the cancellation of bilateral agreements, and the closure of the country’s airspace to French aircraft.

At the request of the authorities in Niger, France began withdrawing its troops in October, before announcing at the end of last December that it had completed the withdrawal of its forces, ending its military deployment in the country, after transporting about 1,500 troops on 145 flights and 15 land convoys.

The French military presence in Niger lasted for decades, and the number of French soldiers was more than 1,500.

About three weeks ago, the spokesman for Niger’s ruling military council, Colonel Amadou Abderrahmane, said that the council had with immediate effect canceled a military agreement with the United States that allows the presence of military and civilian personnel from the (Pentagon) on the country’s territory.

The decision follows a visit a few days ago by US officials, led by US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Fee, including General Michael Langley, commander of the US Africa Command.

The US delegation stayed in Niamey for three days, during which it was unable to meet with General Omar Abdirahman Tiani, commander of the junta, according to a Nigerien government source.

“The arrival of the US delegation did not respect diplomatic norms,” Abdel Rahman said, adding that the US government had “unilaterally” informed Niamey of the date of its arrival and the composition of its delegation.

“The Government of Niger has decided responsibly, taking into account the aspirations and interests of the people, to rescind with immediate effect the Agreement on the Placement of United States Military Personnel and Civilian Personnel of the United States Department of Defense on the territory of Niger,” he noted.

Since last year, about 1,100 U.S. troops have been in Niger, where the U.S. military operates from two bases, including a drone base known as Air Base 201, built near Agadez in central Niger at a cost of more than $100 million.

Niger is the third West African country to work to get rid of European and U.S. colonialism after Mali and Burkina Faso.
