The US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perello, announced the need to stop the worsening humanitarian tragedy in the country, and warned of the danger of the return of extremist factions to the forefront of the scene.

In an interview with the US national radio station, Perello pointed out that the only option to stop the tragedy is the handover of power to civilians and a ceasefire, warning of serious repercussions that could spill over to the entire region.

In the same context, the statements of the assistant commander of the Sudanese army, Yasser al-Atta, sparked a wide controversy, as he stressed the army’s unwillingness to hand over power to civilian forces without elections, pointing to a plan for a transitional period led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

Since the fall of their regime in April 2019, the Brotherhood has been using multiple tools to prepare the ground for the return of its rule, according to Perello, where they have built a network of centers of influence over decades.

Perello added that the Brotherhood’s influence in the army has expanded significantly since the nineties, through the use of religious and extremist slogans to attract young people and involve them in civil wars.

On the other hand, media platforms affiliated with the Brotherhood were active in glorifying the role of what they called “movement cadres” in the fighting, and some platforms went further and considered that the move marked the beginning of the road to the organization’s return to power and the end of any role for the political parties that led the change that overthrew in April 2019 the Brotherhood’s three-decade rule.

The third aspect of the public appearance was the statements quoted by the Secretary-General of the Islamic Movement, Ali Karti, in which he pledged not to give in to any truce or negotiated solutions.
