The new special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, will begin his tour on Tuesday to meet with US partners in Africa and the Middle East.
The Perriello talks aim to unite efforts to end the war, meet the humanitarian needs of the Sudanese people, and develop a roadmap towards the formation of a democratic civilian government.
During his meeting with a number of civil society organizations, political activists and journalists in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, the UN envoy announced an upcoming visit to the countries of the region, with the aim of holding intensive meetings with actors in resolving the Sudanese crisis.
Perriello pledged to play a greater role in pressuring the conflicting parties, pointing out that the decision to appoint him proves the importance of the file to the White House, which will be reflected in Sudan’s position within international circles.
Perriello said that his government contributed humanitarian aid worth one billion dollars, and pointed out that his office is working around the clock, and his actions will reflect his seriousness towards the Sudanese file.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that Tom Perriello, who previously served as U.S. special envoy for Africa’s Great Lakes region, “will coordinate U.S. policy on Sudan, strengthen our efforts to end the fighting, secure unhindered humanitarian access, and support the Sudanese people in their quest for freedom, peace and justice.”
