US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Greenfield has called on the UN Security Council to take immediate action to stop the ongoing war in Sudan.
The Ambassador’s call was aimed at ensuring the flow of humanitarian aid, protecting civilians, and achieving justice for victims of war crimes.
Greenfield called on regional and global leaders to clearly call on warring parties to respect international humanitarian law and facilitate humanitarian access.
Greenfield affirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts to stop the conflict, stressing the need to unite the relevant players to prevent the disintegration of Sudan and build a better future that fulfills the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards a democratically elected civilian government.
The US ambassador criticized the international silence on the Sudanese crisis, expressing the importance of the international community’s action to stop the conflict and protect civilians.
Greenfield pointed to the difficulties of delivering humanitarian aid to those affected by the war, stressing that more than 25 million Sudanese need urgent food assistance.
She stressed the need to appoint a senior humanitarian official to oversee humanitarian access and expand relief efforts.
In a related context, the United States imposed sanctions on more than 10 companies and figures affiliated with the army, rapid support, and elements of the National Congress “Brotherhood”, as part of its efforts to pressure the warring parties to stop the war and move towards a peaceful solution.
Washington has appointed Tom Perello as the U.S. special envoy to Sudan, and the latter began his duties last week with a tour of the region.
The new envoy stated that the only option available to stop the worsening humanitarian tragedy in Sudan is to silence the guns and hand over power to civilians and warned of the danger of the return of militant factions to the forefront of the scene after the outbreak of war in the country.
