The Algerian Football Federation has announced its selection of Bosnian coach Vladimir Petković to take over the leadership of the Algerian national team, successor to Djamel Belmadi, who has been dismissed.

In an official statement published on its website on Thursday, the Algerian federation confirmed that an agreement had been reached with Petkovic to take over, as he is expected to arrive in Algeria on Sunday, in preparation for his first press conference next Monday.

Vladimir Petkovic, who began his career as a Bosnian league player with Sarajevo in 1981 and ended in 1999 with Swiss side Bosch, is considered an experienced coach with a distinguished sporting history.

He has had successful coaching experiences with several clubs, including his time coaching Italian side Lazio, where he led them to the Coppa Italia in 2013.

Petkovic’s international experience was also remarkable, as he took over as coach of the Swiss national team in December 2013, replacing German coach Otmar Hestfeld.

During his coaching tenure, he led the Swiss national team to positive results, including qualifying for the round of 16 at Euro 2016 and reaching the quarter-finals in the 2020 edition, where they eliminated France in a thrilling match on penalties, and this was the first time Switzerland had reached this stage in their history.

Petkovic’s experience with European and international clubs is a valuable addition to the Algerian national team, and the Algerian public is looking forward to seeing a positive impact on the development and improvement of the national team.
