The Algerian delegation participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics attracted the attention of the media and attendees at the opening ceremony when they threw flowers into the Seine River at the bridge where Algerian demonstrators were killed on October 17, 1961.

This move came as a commemoration of the martyrs of that massacre committed by the French police, where hundreds of peaceful Algerian demonstrators were killed by shooting or drowning them in the Seine River.

Despite the festive atmosphere that brought together about 300,000 spectators on the banks of the river to celebrate French culture, this symbolic move caught the attention and sparked great interaction.

The opening ceremony, which was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron, witnessed heavy rain, and the ceremony was distinguished by the artistic participation of Lady Gaga and a group of French and international stars, such as Zinedine Zidane, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.

French middle- and long-distance runner Marie-Josée and judoka Teddy Riner also lit the Olympic cauldron, which was lit at the opening ceremony outside the stadium for the first time.

The Olympic cauldron is expected to remain alight until the closing ceremony on August 11, in a sign of continuing to celebrate the spirit of the Olympic Games.

Algeria is participating in the Paris 2024 Olympics with a delegation of 45 athletes competing in 15 different sports, including athletics, boxing, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, and Greco-Roman and classical wrestling.
