Sudan’s Health Ministry issued a statement warning that the Rapid Support Forces’ transfer of military operations to Gezira state, a hub for medical supplies and services, portends a health catastrophe that could kill thousands.

The ministry stated in its statement that “the Rapid Support Forces militia has transferred war operations to Al-Jazirah state, which has been a refuge for patients and those in need of treatment for more than 5 million citizens. It serves as a vital center for specialized services and medical supplies for 25 million citizens in the central, southern, and western regions, warning of a health catastrophe in the country.”

In other developments, the Sudanese health authority confirmed that “the numbers we will lose among patients, children, mothers, and individuals with chronic diseases and others will be in the thousands, surpassing the number we have lost to killing and weapons.”

In a related context, the ministry reiterated its call to the Rapid Support Forces to immediately withdraw from health institutions and avoid confrontation, urging the protection of healthcare personnel and emergency responders and facilitating their movement to transport patients for treatment.

The Rapid Support Forces have penetrated into the Sudanese state of Al-Jazirah, which is considered an active center for medical services and relief, hosting thousands of displaced individuals. Meanwhile, media sources report that the Sudanese army is preparing to gradually regain control of the state.

The Rapid Support Forces issued a press statement confirming their seizure of strategic military headquarters in Al-Jazirah without resistance from the Sudanese army.

In this context, the Sudanese army announced in a previous statement that it would conduct an investigation to determine the reasons for the army’s withdrawal from the headquarters of the First Infantry Division in the state of Al-Jazirah.
