Sudan welcomed the historic decision of the International Court of Justice affirming its jurisdiction to consider the lawsuit filed by South Africa and other countries against Israel for its alleged commission of genocide in Gaza. The court also issued urgent measures to protect Palestinians from genocide and ensure their humanitarian needs.

A statement from the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that the decision represents a significant victory for the Palestinian people in their just struggle to achieve their rightful rights in establishing an independent state. It is also considered a notable step towards upholding principles of international justice, commitment to international humanitarian law, combating impunity, and affirming that justice prevails over power.

According to the statement, Sudan called on all relevant parties to implement and support the decision, urging the Security Council to declare an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and all occupied Palestinian territories based on this resolution.

It is worth mentioning that on Friday, the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide in Gaza and direct incitement to it. The court stated that Israel must take “all measures within its power to prevent the commission of all acts” within the scope of Article II of the Genocide Convention.

The court acknowledged the right of Palestinians in Gaza to protection from acts of genocide, confirming that the conditions for imposing provisional measures on Israel are met. The court added that Israel must commit to avoiding anything related to killing, assault, and destruction against the inhabitants of Gaza and ensure the immediate provision of their urgent humanitarian needs. Under the judgment, Israel is also required to submit a report to the court within a month regarding all provisional measures.
