Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, reiterated his unwillingness to negotiate with the Rapid Support Forces as long as hostilities continue.
Addressing the armed forces in Omdurman on the first anniversary of the conflict, Burhan said the preconditions for any negotiations included the withdrawal of the RSF from key cities.
Al-Burhan affirmed his commitment to the Jeddah platform, calling for rapid support to abide by what has been agreed, and stressed that the political process cannot progress in light of the continuation of hostilities, noting that the conflict has led to widespread violations that include the occupation of citizens’ homes.
The United Nations Fact-Finding Mission on Sudan said the conflict, which began almost a year ago, has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more.
Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the United Nations Secretary-General, noted the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe left by the conflict, stressing that some 24 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance.
France, Germany, and the European Union are expected to co-organize a humanitarian conference for Sudan and neighboring countries in Paris on Monday, as part of international efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in the country.
