Violence escalated in Sudan on Sunday, with more than 150 people, including civilians, killed in fierce clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The clashes erupted mainly in the Faw region of eastern Sudan and spread to various areas in Darfur in the west of the country and Gezira state south of the capital Khartoum.

In the nearly hour-long clashes in the Faw area, more than 200 members of the Sudanese army and allied militias were killed after they were ambushed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) as they advanced towards Gezira State, which is under their control.

After the clashes, the RSF announced its control of several military assets, seizing more than 70 army vehicles, seizing five tanks, and capturing several soldiers.

Tensions had escalated in the previous days ahead of the clashes, with military-aligned media outlets reporting on military movements and preparations to retake Gezira province. However, some sources denied these reports, noting that what happened were strategic moves in preparation for the impending battle.

In the capital, Khartoum, the combat zones witnessed relative calm, despite conflicting reports, as some military-allied media outlets published photos showing the arrest of many foreigners who were escaping from the al-Jili refinery north of the capital, while sources from the Rapid Support Forces denied the veracity of these reports, stressing that the detainees are ordinary Ethiopian workers.

In Darfur, an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias on villages west of El Fasher city was reported, killing more than 50 people and injuring many.

A number of villages were also burned, and citizens’ property looted. However, an informed source described the attack as mysterious, suggesting it could be the result of internal disagreements between armed groups.

The Sudan Medical Syndicate said in a statement that various villages were subjected to attacks that killed many citizens and seriously injured dozens in Gezira state.

According to the statement, the Rapid Support Forces attacked villages and areas in Gezira state with heavy and light weapons, firing indiscriminately and heavily on unarmed residents, resulting in 28 deaths and 240 injuries.
