The civil authority in the Jebel Marra areas of western Sudan announced the death of more than 2,400 people, including children, women, and the elderly, as a result of acute malnutrition.
The authorities said that the number of children suffering from acute malnutrition in Jebel Marra reached 26,636 children, most of them under the age of five, and 1,724 deaths of children with chronic malnutrition were recorded.
To date, 75,407 elderly, pregnant and lactating women have been severely malnourished in the area’s shelter camps, 694 of whom have died from hunger and lack of primary health care.
Authorities cited severe shortages of life-saving medicines and medical supplies in the area, with only one hospital and a poorly equipped feeding centre.
The situation worsened after international organizations evacuated staff due to the outbreak of war in April, halting humanitarian aid, paralyzing life in the area and failing the planting season, authorities said.
In a related context, the Coordination of Resistance Committees in the city of Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira state, announced that the death toll from the rapid support attacks on the villages of the state has risen to 43 dead during the past two weeks.
The coordination explained that the state is witnessing a third wave of violence, which affected all localities of the state without exception, as it accused the Rapid Support Forces of continuing to oppress, terrorize and impoverish unarmed citizens.
