Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Stephanie Khoury affirmed UNSMIL’s determination to assist Libyans in launching a comprehensive process to end the political stalemate.
Khoury explained that the situation at the Ras Ajdir border crossing was reviewed and stressed the need to search for a peaceful solution to the existing tension.
She also explained on her account on the X platform that she listened to members of the Supreme Council of the Amazigh of Libya on fair representation and meaningful participation in the political process and decision-making circles, as well as meeting the urgent development needs of the population.
It is noteworthy that in March 2024, the Libyan and Tunisian authorities closed the Ajdir crossing after armed clashes between two Libyan security forces in an attempt to control the crossing, and on March 28, 2024, the Libyan authorities announced a joint agreement to secure and reopen the crossing after the deployment of military forces to secure it.
The outgoing Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, discussed last Friday with Tunisian President Kais Saied the executive procedures for the opening of the Ras Ajdir crossing, and the mechanism for organizing its work between the competent authorities in the two countries to facilitate the movement of citizens and eliminate the negatives witnessed by the crossing during the past years.
