Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, met with the Russian Ambassador to Libya, Aydar Aghanin, in the capital, Tripoli.
Khoury reported, through the “X” platform, that the meeting came as a joint confirmation of “the necessity of coordinating efforts to find a solution based on national consensus that includes all political and social components in Libya.”
Khoury also discussed with the Spanish Ambassador, Javier Quintana, last Wednesday, the need to enhance coordination between regional and international efforts to support the political process in the country.
These talks come within the framework of Khoury’s ongoing efforts to achieve a breakthrough in the political stalemate that led to the resignation of the former UN envoy, Abdullah Batili.
It is noteworthy that this meeting is the first meeting of the Russian ambassador with the UN envoy, noting that he met twice during this year with the former UN envoy to Libya, Abdullah Batili, the first took place on January 15, 2024, and the second on March 10, 2024, during which they stressed the urgent necessity for the engagement of the Libyan parties. Effective in reaching a political settlement to hold national elections.
